Weston Coyney pupils gear up for safety lessons
Pupils at two Weston Coyney schools are set to receive expert lessons in safety from development company The Compendium Group. Health and safety experts from Compendium will be visiting Weston Coyney Infant School (on Wednesday, 16 January) and Weston Coyney Junior School (on Thursday, 17 January).
Health and safety manager John Crossan and health and safety advisor Debbie Hubbocks will talk to pupils to highlight the dangers of construction sites and building activity. The Compendium Group – which has been formed by housing regeneration specialists Lovell and the Riverside Group – is carrying out a major construction project in the area. Compendium is carrying out the new Weston Heights development building 283 new homes and refurbishing other existing houses at the former National Coal Board estate through a £55 million regeneration programme.
During John and Debbie’s visits, pupils will have the chance to dress up in different types of protective safety clothing and equipment such as hard hats, goggles, hi-visibility fluorescent jackets and gloves.
“Dressing up in safety gear is a fun way of helping children grasp the real dangers posed by construction sites and activity,” says health and safety manager John Crossan. “Young people need to know from an early age that they should never play on construction sites and wherever we work close to schools, we make a point of going in and communicating this important safety message.”
