Community DevelopmentProgress made so far:Residents believe that promoting harmony within the community and developing local facilities and activities should be a priority. Some of the many community projects and activities that have or are taking place are detailed below: Kid-Zone Youth ClubThe Coalville Residents’ Association originally launched the Kidzone Youth and Computer Club in December 2005 and Rob Flello MP was the guest of honour. The aim of Kidzone is to provide the young people on the estate a place where they can go, to meet with friends, get involved in sport, and make use of facilities such as computers and art and craft materials. The Youth Club, which is held at the Coalville Community Education Centre, is for ages 8 to 16 and takes place on Wednesdays, 6.30-8.30pm Over 14’s Youth ClubIn response to feedback from teenagers on the estate, the Residents Association have recently expanded their youth club to include a second night, which is just for those over 14 years of age. This Over 14’s Youth Club is run in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Youth Services and takes place on Tuesday nights (6.30-9.00pm) at the Community Education Centre. It gives local teenagers somewhere to hang out safely, use the internet, play music and pool etc. It also gives them the opportunity to get to know their local youth workers and local community police (who drop in from time to time) and find out about services and activities that the council and other agencies provide for their age group. Young FirefightersIn 2008/09, young people from the estate have taken part in several junior firefighters courses with the local Fire Service, organised through Kidzone and the Coalville Residents’ Association. As well as attending the courses, young people were involved in fundraising for this project themselves, successfully obtaining money from the Youth Opportunities Fund. |
